This site by the American Institute of Physics is very informative.  The layout is full of plenty of insights and I highly recommend a few minutes soaking it up.  As I looked, I was reminded of the book “Seeing and Believing” by Richard Panek which I read several years ago.  The basic premise of the book is that advances in telescope making have paralleled advances in civilization throughout history.
