About Mr. H.

I’ve been teaching here at AHS since 1987!  That’s right, I probably taught some of your parents if they too went to Anacortes High School.  I’ve enjoyed teaching math and physics over the years with greater emphasis on the sciences in recent years.  Besides teaching, I used to coach volleyball and basketball – now I enjoy watching my kids play sports.  I still try to be active by playing basketball a few times a week or hiking around Fidalgo Island.  I’ve spent a lot of time fixing up our house over the years and I enjoy a 2-minute commute to work everyday.

My wife, Valerie, used to teach English here at AHS before we started our family, but now she’s teaching elementary P.E. at Mt. Erie School.  She loves a teaching job where she doesn’t have to bring home papers to correct every night!  The kids at Mt. Erie Elementary are fortunate to have someone who teaches with so much enthusiasm.  When my wife isn’t teaching or watching our own kids in their activities, she also plays the guitar and leads worship at out church.

Our kids, Hannah, Luke, and Henry bring us a lot of joy every day.  Each is unique in his/her own right and we feel very, very fortunate to be so close to each of them.

During the 2003-04 school year, we all went to Costa Rica for 13 months to do mission work at a refugee settlement filled mostly with Nicaraguans.  The trip was an incredible experience for our whole family and we most definitely grew closer as a family at that time.  Our work focused on ministries geared toward high school aged people who were beginning to get a glimpse of their potential in life – much like my current students back here at Anacortes High School.
