In 1960, Capt. Joe Kittinger rode a helium balloon 20 miles up from New Mexico. Then he jumped out for a 4:37 freefall before using his parachute.

Check out this link to a history of cosmology website .
This site by the American Institute of Physics is very informative. The layout is full of plenty of insights and I highly recommend a few minutes soaking it up. As I looked, I was reminded of the book “Seeing and Believing ” by Richard Panek which I read several years ago. The basic premise of the book is that advances in telescope making have paralleled advances in civilization throughout history.
